French school Gobelins has unveiled a new thesis short film from the class of 2022: Hôtel Nuit Noire (“Black Night Hotel”), a 2D animation project that invite you to follow three characters sharing the same dream…
What if it were possible to meet one another in our sleep? One night, three strangers find themselves in a Hotel of dreams. They must navigate this strange world together before dawn.
The team that created the animated short film (Vincent Albert, Neïl Dieu, Malo Doucet, May Taraud, Marie Toury) explain that they had a common goal: they wanted to create a short that would deal with mystery, tales, adventure, encounters, chance and fantastic. They chose to set the story in a hotel for several reasons: it is a place where people meet, and this setting has been used countless times by directors: it is therefore a place filled with memories that will resonate with any viewer. The team also wanted to avoid using ellipses as a narrative device. Last, but not least, they chose to focus on diverse characters (a child, a young woman, an old man) in order to create a more universal short film.
Grief after a loss, relationship grief, the death of a fantasy: in the end, Hôtel Nuit Noire is focused on three characters that may seem different at first, but who have the same underlying need to leave behind something that is preventing them to move forward in their lives.
