Laika unveils a teaser for Wildwood, they’re next stop-motion animated film.

Directed by Travis Knight (head of the studio, director of Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee), Wildwood is described by the studio as “a tale of love, loss, sacrifice and secrets, and of the magic you can find on your doorstep, if you’re willing to look for it.” The screenplay, written by Chris Butler, is an adaptation of a novel by Colin Meloy. It follows a young teenager, Prue McKeel, and her best friend Curtis as they explore a hidden and magical forest in search of Prue’s younger brother, who has been kidnapped by crows.

Here is the teaser, followed by some additional information.

Laika optionned the book for adaptation just weeks after its release, back in 2011. Production for Wildwood didn’t start until 2021, however. In a recent interview, Travis Knight explained that this extended development period was due to the film’s scale, which presented significant challenges for stop-motion animation, including fight scenes, aerial sequences, and the eagle seen below—the studio promises that its movements will closely mimic those of a real bird.

The release is scheduled for spring 2025, so we can expect more images in the coming months.
