Nintendo and Illumination Studios announced the continuation of their partnership around Nintendo IPs. A a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. is planned to be released in 2026. The US release is scheduled for April 3.

The announcement video carefully avoids giving away too many details. Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, explains that Illumination Studios Paris has been working on the storyboard and set design. Shigeru Miyamoto, Creative Director at Nintendo, adds that the core idea is to “expand the world of Mario,” and explains that at this stage it’s not possible to say more.

We do know, however, that the upcoming animated feature is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and written by Matthew Fogel. In other words, the same team behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This choice makes sense considering the results of the first film, which earned 1.4 billion dollars at the global box office, on a budget of about 100 million (marketing expenses not included).

We might get a few additional details in June at the Annecy Festival. We will keep you updated on upcoming announcement.
