Icali, a New3dge graduation project inspired by Aztec mythology: concept arts, a short film, and a video game!

We wrap up our overview of the 2024 graduation projects from New3dge school: after Lunar and Harmonic, here comes Icali!
Once again, this is a “common worlds” graduation project: students from the concept art, animation/VFX, and game art programs worked collaboratively on the same universe.

Icali is inspired by Aztec mythology:

Set in the peak of the Aztec civilization with a fantastical twist, the world of Icali is teeming with mythical creatures and grand, magical cities. You play as Tlahuicole, the renowned warrior of the Tlaxcalan people, chosen by the gods to combat the awakening of ancient, malevolent forces.
With divine powers, you must restore balance and save your world from impending doom. This vibrant and mystical setting, filled with rich Aztec culture and mythology, provides an epic backdrop for your heroic journey.

To start, here’s a glimpse of the work done by the concept art students:

CGI students created an animated short film and a making-of, showcasing various stages of production such as motion capture:

The game art students developed a video game. Here’s its trailer, a gameplay preview, and a making-of:
