Louise Mélin Brings a Divine Vision to Life

This article is also available in: Français

Artist Louise Mélin presents her latest project, inspired by the visions of Saint John featuring creatures with multiple eyes.

She combined various tools and techniques: the background is a 17th-century painting, and she used Substance 3D Modeler in VR to sculpt the creature. She also relied on other Adobe tools, as well as Blender.

The breakdown posted on Artstation is worth checking out: Louise Mélin reveals the techniques and tricks she used, as well as her artistic choices guided by history. In fact, as she explained in the video below, she enjoys starting from historical references. In this case, she deliberately avoided giving the ox a highly dynamic pose or overly muscular anatomy: while the result would have been more striking, it would have been far removed from the aesthetic standards used in Christian art representations.
She also explains in the breakdown how she created the aging effect for the frame, as well as the filter that gives the piece a look reminiscent of painting.

Be sure to check out our video interview with Louise Mélin as well: she explains the philosophy behind this kind of project, with an approach that might inspire you for your own creations! In particular, she discusses the importance she places on historical and cultural aspects in her projects, her use of sources and references, and even the logic behind material creation.
