Today was the 4th and last day of SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 in Sydney, Australia.
A highlight was the keynote by Paul Debevec on virtual cinematography for virtual production. He presented a history of research at UC Berkeley, used in The Matrix, X-Men, Spider-Man 2, and Benjamin Button, as well as more recent projects: the use of image-based lighting to control LEDs being a key in Gravity, Rogue One, or The Mandalorian. Paul Debevec also noted that current research projects will soon be able to improve virtual production systems.

Another highlight was the panel dedicated to virtual humans. Christophe Hery, Mark Sagar, Paul Debevec, and Mike Seymour revisited the main challenges, such as: interactivity, personalization, realism.

We explored the different areas of the exhibition: the exhibition floor floor, emerging technologies, posters, XR projects, and more.

Forum 8 was THE big boothof this edition. They showcased their drive sumulation technologies.

Lots of motion capture this year at SIGGRAPH Asia, similar to what we saw this summer during SIGGRAPH. Although brands like Vicon, Manus, or Rokoko were not present.

In terms of artistic projects, we appreciated Erased Murmurs (above) by Miu Ling Lam, an interactive installation that shines a light on the disappearance of graffiti in Hong Kong. These are a medium for messages in public space. The work explores various themes, particularly the lasting impact of the 2019-2020 protests in Hong Kong.

SIGGRAPH Asia will be back next year in December: save the date!
