Pixar just launched launching a new rendering competition. Your mission: use RenderMan (both the paid version or the free non-commercial version are ok to use) to earn a spot on the podium.

he theme for this challenge is “Compute,” in honor of this edition’s partner: IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Pixar gives a few examples of topics that would fit the brief: futuristic cities with upcoming innovations or realities where electricity does not exist could be potential subjects, for example. The theme is deliberately broad to give you maximum creative freedom. The render can be photorealistic or stylized (like in a Pixar film, for example), but should must remain physically plausible.

The deadline: November 26th, 2024 – Midnight PST (Pacific Standard Time – USA). Three winners will receive prize packs valued between $13,000 and $31,000, depending on their podium position. These packs include workstations, software, tablets, subscriptions to various services, and some Pixar-themed goodies like teapots.

Note that RenderMan is compatible with many industry tools such as Maya, Blender, and Houdini. Additionally, various resources are available for participants, including software trial versions, free 3D assets, tutorials to learn RenderMan, and even cloud rendering. So there’s no excuse not to participate!
