VIEW Conference 2024: a well-deserved celebration – our interviews, coming soon!

This article is also available in: Français

Last week, the 3DVF team was in Turin and attended VIEW Conference as a media partner. The event celebrated its 25th edition.

In the coming days and weeks, you’ll find articles and video interviews on 3DVF and our YouTube channel. In the meantime, here’s a glimpse of the atmosphere and our experience on-site!

A Human-Sized Event with Diverse Talks

One of the highlights of the VIEW Conference is its variety of speakers, featuring big names in the industry: ILM, DreamWorks, Pixar, Disney, Fortiche, directors Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, Fallout, Person of Interest) and Fede Alvarez (Alien: Romulus), DNEG, Paul Debevec, Aardman, Studio Gillis… Studios, artists and companies discussed recent projects, along with retrospectives taking us back 10, or even 25 years.

DreamWorks shared how they created the critically-acclaimed The Wild Robot, Disney shared artistic information about Moana 2. We also attended talks about Dune 2, the latest Alien film, Paul Debevec’s research, a retrospective on the Pirates of the Caribbean saga featuring the birth of on-set motion capture, another focused on Star Wars: Episode 1… The program was incredibly diverse.

Setareh Samandari & Habib Zargarpour

We also enjoyed talks about TV series and short films. Interdimensional VFX CEO Setareh Samandari and Oscar-nominated VFX supervisor Habib Zargarpour shared their work on Tales from the Woods, and explained how they created mermaids on a tight budget. Another highlight was Jonathan Nolan’s keynote, accompanied by VFX supervisor Jay Worth. The duo discussed their long-time collaboration on TV series.

Fortiche

Even more surprising was the 2-hour in-depth talk on Dune 2 by the VFX team (VFX Supervisor Paul Lambert, Patrick Heinen from Wylie Co., Rhys Salcombe, and Stephen James from DNEG). Few events organize such lenghty talks, yet the team perfectly transitioned through various aspects of the film, making it a captivating experience.

Big Names, Yet Approachable Speakers

Another strong point of the event was the fact that speakers were easy to talk to. And we’re not talking about media access, but that of the general public: the speakers were eager to interact with attendees after their presentations. The public could ask for autographs from director Chris Sanders, chat with ILM animation director Hal Hickel, or touch real Star Wars archives when meeting Alexandre Poncet and Paul Duncan where discussing books about movie history.

Reflections on the Industry

Besides the main big talks that drew large crowds, the program also featured more specific but equally worthwhile topics. For example, Dupe Visual Effects gave a presentation on their ethical and environmental initiatives, while the Young People in VIEW session touched on storytelling, climate change, and the impact of COVID on the new generation of artists.

25 Editions… See You Next Year for the 26th!

As you can guess, we think this 2024 edition of the VIEW Conference was a success. And while we mostly focused on the event itself, we must also highlight that Turin, with its rich architecture, is a beautiful backdrop.
