Article updated on Dec 11, 2024: the MetroX Kickstarter campaign is now over, but thanks to our partner Revopoint, you can still get 7% OFF thanks to our coupon for MetroX: RE3DVF7 on the official website.

Revopoint, a well-known name when it comes to consumer and professional 3D scanning technology, is back with a new 3D scanner.
Following the launch of the MIRACO last year, here is MetroX: a hybrid 3D scanner combining the power of a multi-line laser and 62-line full-field blue structured light scanner!

In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know about this scanner. Plus, a few scans created by the 3DVF team as well as beta testers, to give you a good idea of what MetroX can achieve!

Revopoint MetroX: 4 scanning modes, impressive features

Revopoint explains that this new metrology-grade 3D scanner can provide precision up to 0.01 mm, accuracy up to 0.03mm, and fused point distance up to 0.03 mm.
In other words, you’ll be able to get precise, repeatable scans, ready to be used for your needs, whether you are working on reverse engineering projects, doing quality control, scanning props for VFX, creating a scan for a 3D print or scanning a print to check the accuracy of your 3D printer, or looking to create an accurate 3D model of a priceless ancient artifact.

The Revopoint MetroX is an innovative hybrid blue-light scanner, combining structured light and laser for an enhanced 3D scanning experience. Both full-field mode and auto-turntable mode provide an excellent scanning experience.

Indeed, the Revopoint MetroX features 4 scanning modes, making it more flexible: you can pick and choose which mode you want to use depending on the situation. The cutting-edge blue-line laser array enables Cross Lines and Parallel Lines 3D scanning. The powerful blue-structured light projector offers rapid Full-field handheld scans and a convenient Auto Turntable.

  • The industrial-grade 14 Cross lines laser scanning mode efficiently scans shiny metal and black surfaces.
While scanning, seven pairs of crossed blue laser lines capture up to 800,000 points per second. (Markers required)
  • The Parallel Lines laser mode is ideal for capturing fine and complex details using the 7 high-powered parallel blue laser lines. (Markers required)
  • The 62-line blue Full-field structured light scanning mode efficiently captures the fine details of an object at up to 7 million points per second.
  • The Auto Turntable scanning mode Streamlines the scanning process with one-click automated scans using the Dual-axis Turntable and 62-line Blue Full-field Structured Light.
This mode delivers color scans, with the ability to set white balance manually.

Revopoint provides uncut videos showing these scanning modes in action over on Youtube. We highly recommend you check them out, as they provide a good sense of the workflow.

The Revopoint MetroX 3D scanner can be used both as a handheld device or a desktop scanner, on a tripod (a compact tripod is included). Revopoint states that the MetroX 3D scanner can scan small to medium size objects: basically, volumes from 10mm x 10mm x 10mm up to 1m x 1m x 1m.
Also, the scanner features a RGB Camera to create color scans (in turntable mode only).

Revopoint MetroX 3D scanner is compatible with Windows and macOS computers (the macOS version will be launched soon). The scanner will connect to your computer thanks to a USB-C cable.

Of course, you need to be able to trust your scanner. Which is why a high-end lithography calibration plate, with a pattern accuracy of up to 10μm, is included. You can therefore calibrate MetroX if needed and maintain reliable accuracy.

The 3D scanner comes with Revo Scan, a free software (no subscription!) that supports point cloud scanning, fusion, meshing, editing, import, and export. Revo Scan supports various file formats (PLY, OBJ, STL, ASC, 3MF, GLTF, FBX), therefore you’ll be able to import your scans into third-party post-processing software. For example Quicksurface, Geomagic Wrap, and Geomagic Control for CAD use cases, or ZBrush, Maya, Blender, Unreal for Media & Entertainment professionals.

PC/macOS requirements

To make sure you’ll be able to use the Revopoint MetroX 3D scanner, here are the minimum and recommended specs. This scanner can be used both with a Windows and macOS computer.

7% OFF your MetroX Purchase Thanks to Our Coupon!

Revopoint launched the MetroX using a Kickstarter campaign. Just like the 6 others campaigns launched in the past for their previous products, Revopoint was successful: the goal has already been reached, with more than 2.3 million dollars pledged by backers worldwide!
You can now order the 3D scanner on the official website and get 7% OFF thanks to our coupon for MetroX: RE3DVF7 .

If you’re interested in metrology and/or scanning metallic objects, the MetroX Advanced Edition (available as an option) is recommended: you’ll get a Marker Block Kit with various magnetic markers, as well as bars with standard thread. These can be fixed, for example, on the turntable, and you can stick magnetic markers on them.

Check out the official website for more information about the MetroX 3D scanner, including package details and full specs.

User cases

Revopoint sent a MetroX preproduction unit to 3DVF. Here are a few scans created by the team.
No retouching done outside the provided software, Revo Scan: these scans are either raw scans or slightlly cleaned up using Revo Scan.
Since 3DVF partnered with Revopoint for the MetroX campaign, this article is of course not a full-fledge MetroX review, but here are some of our scans and impressions.

  • First, here are a few organic scans. We used the auto turntable mode, a massive time-saving tool. This mode also allows you to create textured scans (such as the one below on the right):

  • A Plastic cover, scanned using cross lines mode.

  • The back of a LED panel, scanned using cross line mode.

  • The 3DVF team also scanned a few coins and small objects, with turntable mode: just a few clicks, and the software automatically controls the dual axis turntable!
The results are quite impressive : we didn’t use any scanning spray, yet we got detailed scans.

What beta testers achieved using MetroX

Here are a few examples of 3D scans created by MetroX beta testers.

  • Kentacles scanned a Bioschock figurine, using the Dual-axis Turntable. As you can see, MetroX can also create textured scans, using the turntable mode.
    Real size: about 178mm.
  • Here is another textured scan, created by Rilot.
  • The same user, Rilot, also scanned this shoe.

Software optimizations: more to come!

Before we conclude, we should also highlight that Revopoint has been working on improving their software over the years. The video below highlights this ongoing effort. You can expect more improvements in the future.

Conclusion

As you can see, MetroX has the ability to capture a wide range of subjects, from motor parts to sculptures, from metallic objects to textured 3D models.

This article provides some examples of what MetroX can accomplish, but you can also check out other user cases on the official Revopoint forum.
